Yummy French Toast

Yummy French Toast

This is a favorite in my house on a Saturday morning. Actually it’s a favorite any day of the week. My toddler would eat French toast for breakfast, lunch and dinner if given the chance, and if I am being honest, my husband might as well!

Makes 7-8 slices of French toast

Ingredients:

  • 7-8 slices of sandwich bread (we like to buy the buttermilk type, but you can use white, wheat or any type of sliced bread you prefer)
  • 2 eggs (whisked)
  • 2/3 cup whole milk (use 2% if you prefer)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar (optional if you want to reduce sugar, my family would not eat it if I left this out) 🙂
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • Pinch of salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Butter

Instructions:

  1. Whisk eggs in a flat shallow baking dish. Add milk and whisk more. Add remaining sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla essence and a pinch of salt.
  2. Pan frying the bread at the right temperature and with the oil and butter is key!
  3. Heat a non-stick frying pan on medium heat. Add a drizzle of vegetable oil and a little butter. Swirl around the pan. I add a little vegetable oil as it prevents the butter from burning or getting too brown.
  4. Dip the bread in the mixture and turn and dunk the other side, lift and let the bread drain a bit back into the mixture.
  5. Add to the pan, reduce heat to medium low and cook each side of the bread at least 2 minutes until desired brown color.
  6. If getting too brown, lower heat. Monitor constantly to ensure it doesn’t burn.
  7. Serve with your favorite toppings (e.g. the fruit of your choice, maple syrup, butter, powdered sugar).
